basics [top.]
NAME: Calanthe. If Calanthe has a surname of any kind, she has either long since forgotten it or abandoned it; she never supplies it during introductions and no one knows what it is, if she even had one to begin with.
GOES BY: Callie, but only those in her social circle are permitted to use the shortened version of her name.
AGE AND DOB: 309. March 10th 1710. Calanthe appears, physically, to be anywhere from her late teens to her early twenties.
SPECIES: Demon. Spirit Demon, to be precise.
CAREER: What career? Calanthe doesn’t believe she should work, though in her loyalty to the Raidan, she will do what is asked of her by those higher up the hierarchy than she is herself. She knows how to play the game.
CURRENT RESIDENCE: The Ruby Curse.
MARITAL STATUS: Single.
SEXUALITY: Bisexual.
ETHER: Yes. Calanthe is cool and edged with the acrid scent of decay, an ashen cloud that wraps around you and hugs tight and close, invading your personal space. There is nothing comforting or soothing about Calanthe across the Ether. It’s eerie and unnerving, laced with an ominous whisper of laughter that is so inherently Calanthe, sinister and cunning, amused and derisive, taking joy in the pain and suffering of others. She creeps up without invitation and settles in as if she belongs, with no regard whatsoever for the wants and desires of others.

ABILITIES
POSSESSION. Easily Calanthe’s most dangerous ability and the inarguably the most useful in combat against enemy numbers that exceed her own in terms of allies, the female demon is capable of possessing a victim via physical contact, though there must be bare flesh for her to work with; as a result of this, she often goes for the neck, wrapping her hand around the vessel’s throat and triggering the possession process instantly with a mental command. Essentially what Calanthe does when she possesses a victim is transfer a good deal of her own spirit into the other person’s body, subduing their own consciousness and will completely and assuming control of their physical actions, making them a puppet for her to manipulate as she sees fit. Of course, this is so useful in combat because she can turn a dangerous opponent around on her other enemies and use all of their abilities in doing so as if they were her own with the vessel’s normal level of control. When Calanthe does this, her own body is weakened, so much of her strength temporarily transmitted to the vessel of her choice, and she usually at least collapses, though she very rarely loses consciousness; it does leave her somewhat vulnerable, so she has to be careful with her choice of when and where and so on, lest another enemy in the confusion take advantage of her physical state. The possession is ended either mentally or physically by Calanthe; mentally with a psychic command, her mind linked with that of the one in the vessel during her control of it (but never after; her presence fades, though the vessel -- if they survive the fight, depending on what happens during the demon’s possession -- will feel an echo of her after she is gone for several hours at least), or physically by the same kind of touch with which she begins the process. Alternatively, the vessel can be rendered completely unconscious or killed, and that will sever Calanthe from her victim; she can also be forced from a vessel by being wounded herself, though it has to be severe enough to thoroughly break her concentration (since she needs to concentrate on her vessel at all times during the possession, with at least half her consciousness, or they will simply become immobile, like a drone waiting for a command) or she will likely be able to endure thanks to her age. Obviously if Calanthe is killed, her hold over the victim will be shattered and they will return to normal. On top of that echo of her presence in their minds, vessels will often feel physically ill after she returns their control to them (willingly or otherwise), as if something is out of place, slightly out of alignment; it isn’t uncommon for migraines to follow her departure and many a released vessel in the past has suffered from violent nausea for several hours as a result of her control. They also remember everything they have done whilst under the demon’s control. Any wounds the vessel suffers during Calanthe’s control will be felt by her when she is possessing them, but she will not carry them herself upon releasing the individual. An interesting (for her at least) side-effect of possessions that don’t end in death is Calanthe’s ease of connection across the Ether, as if she is beside the person, regardless of the real distance between them; she can slide in past their barriers and walls much easier if she has possessed them for any length of time. She has also been able to sense former vessels if they are near to her position at any point following their release, regardless of whether she can actually see or hear them.

MEDIUMSHIP. As a medium, Calanthe can communicate with the spirits of those who have passed from the world of the living, those who wander the middle realm between life and death. These spirits, or ghosts depending on how you wish to label them, can detect Calanthe by a kind of pulsing energy, a thread of heat that draws them to her, for better or worse. She can see, hear, smell, taste and feel them on every level, far more intimately and powerfully than anyone without the power of mediumship, able to interact with them, even touch them if she focuses and draws her strength to do so. They can deliver to her messages both audible and mental, with words or with a touch against her mind, and it works both ways; Calanthe can control spirits, especially the weaker ones, and use them to do her bidding, whether it be to pester a rival with poltergeist-like behaviour or to spy on a true enemy. Spirits can go where living beings cannot, after all. Calanthe can also feed from spirits, drawing their ethereal energy into herself to boost her strength and power; just how long she can use this strength is directly linked to just how much she exerts herself at any given time with that spiritual energy feeding her actions.

NECROMANCY. By far Calanthe’s most destructive and chaotic power, as well as the most sinister and daunting, her necromancy grants her the ability to summon those who have fallen and died back from the grave, regardless of how long they have been dead. In short, Calanthe creates genuine zombies out of corpses, whether they be fresh from the street or decayed and rotting from the grave. She takes great delight in summoning these abominations and is capable of wreaking a great deal of havoc with them. She does not need to control them, necessarily, instead only needs to resurrect them with a dark, unholy energy from her very core and then unleash them on the world. From there, the animated dead will go on to act upon the most primal, basic instinct, the need to feed. They attack anything in sight, and their range of movement is wholly dependant on their condition; if they are able to run, they will run. They are incapable of speech, but instead growl, grunt, bellow and scream, guttural, spine-chilling sounds of predatory hunger and desperation. Once she has raised the dead, Calanthe does not need to do anything else; she does not need to keep them animated or continue to feed them energy. She can instead stand at the sidelines and watch them hunt and feed. She can destroy them all, however, by retracting their life-force, the one she has given them, at which point they will fall and become inanimate once again. Calanthe cannot fall victim to her own undead creations, either, she has noticed; she can walk amongst them, and instinctively, as if they do not register her as a source of food, they will not attack her in the slightest.

PHYSICAL PROWESS. As a demon, Calanthe has full access to the standard set of perks that come with being what some might call “unholy”. She has heightened speed and strength, as well as enhanced reflexes and senses far beyond that of any mortal. She can also heal at a rapid rate, something that has come in very handy over the many years she has walked the earth. She is far more durable than any human could ever hope, as well, able to take much, much more, physically, than a lesser creature. Calanthe will also never age past how she appears now, a delightful offshoot of her demonic heritage.

SKILLS: Over the years, Calanthe has become interested in all kinds of strange things at which she has become adept, from hotwiring cars to playing poker, mixing cocktails to calligraphy. There is a lot that Calanthe is good at, strangely, all kinds of random, seemingly useless skills she has picked up over the years. Mostly she is highly adaptable and has a keen eye and memory, a “mind like a steel trap”, some might say. She seems untouchable when it comes to actions and words a good deal of the time, but that isn’t flawless, far from it in fact; it varies from day to day just how unflappable she is. She can be regal and businesslike at the drop of a hat, and is a very gifted actress, able to fool mortal with ease and even a good deal of other supernaturals with her façade. Calanthe can mimic accents and sounds flawlessly American already even though she hasn’t been in the country long. Naturally she can speak, write and read fluent French, given that she lived there for many years.
LIMITATIONS: Being a demon, Calanthe is naturally weak to holy relics, much to her frustration. She cannot tread on hallowed ground, must avoid crosses and crucifixes, holy water, and everything else blessed and properly sanctified by an ordained minister, father or priest. Certain spells woven by witches or those with magical abilities can keep her at bay as well, which has maddened her more than once in the past and driven her to acts of vicious cruelty and violence, not unlike a child having a temper tantrum. Calanthe has a wicked temper and is prone to tantrums that can range from the smashing of a glass to the full-blown destruction of an entire room, the female demon using only her bare hands to tear things to bits and hurl breakables into walls. She has one hell of an ego, and is painfully arrogant.
WEAPONRY TRAINING: Calanthe has an extensive knowledge of weaponry because she doesn’t like not being good at things. She prefers blades, which allow her to get up close and personal with people, but she can and will use a gun if absolutely necessary. She dislikes guns; she thinks their crude and too abrupt, there’s no art to them. Essentially, Calanthe knows how to turn just about anything into a weapon.
GROUP: The Raidan.
POSITION: Whatever her superiors need her to be, from a pretty thing sitting in the corner to an assassin.
OPINION: The Raidan’s ideals match her own; they want to claim their rightful place and squash the humans down into submission. That suits her just fine, and she will stay with the Raidan until those goals change, though she hopes it never changes.
ALLIANCES: The Raidan.
RIVALRIES: The Elari. The Watch.

appearance [top.]
Standing at 5’5, Calanthe is not the tallest of women nor will she ever be, but there is still something regal and powerful about her despite her willowy frame and lean structure, built more for running than combat. She is a demon, however, and looks can be very, very deceiving with her kind, lethally so in some cases. That is definitely true for Calanthe, who will readily lure a victim in with her unassuming appearance and then strike before they can realise the true danger in getting close. She has brown hair that has the tendency to redden of its own accord depending on just how much sun she gets at any given time; it hangs around her shoulders, just a little past the joints and against her collarbone at the front and her shoulder blades at the back. Her eyes are green and usually alight with some kind of cunning intent, but will shift to an all-encompassing, inky black when she uses her powers to any degree, giving her an unearthly, deathly appearance. In terms of clothing, Calanthe is flighty, acting on a whim; some days she may appear feminine, with her hair treated and subtle, tasteful touches of makeup, but at others she may tone it down completely, going so far as to wear an outdated band t-shirt and sneakers with her coppery mane in disarray and her face untouched. She in unpredictable at the best of times, and her wardrobe reflects this wonderfully.

DISTINGUISHING MARKS: As a demon, Calanthe can heal, naturally, and as a result has no scars to speak of. She has tattoos inked in black on the inside of each wrist; on the left, in cursive scroll, is the Latin word “vita” (life) and on the right is “letum” (death, ruin, annihilation). She is considering getting another tattoo of some kind, but cannot decide what, and as such, has held off.

personality [top.]
To say that Calanthe is a spoiled brat would be a shocking understatement. She is a demon who is very used to getting her way and loves to do so; when she is denied, her temper builds to breaking point quickly, unleashing in a fierce eruption that sees objects and people broken in the wake of her wrath. On the outside, Calanthe might seem patient and controlled, but underneath that cool, cunning exterior is a raging tempest, a tumultuous crashing of waves, and there’s no telling when the storm will truly break and destroy everything in its path. The female demon doesn’t know when that time will come and honestly? She doesn’t care. It’s not her problem, to put it simply. That’ll be a mess for other people to clear up. Calanthe does not clean up her own messes. She never has. She loves to win, enjoys being on top, but there are times when she can openly acknowledge the rightful seniority of others. Her time with the Raidan has shown her that there are demons and other supernaturals stronger and smarter than she is herself, despite her being an undeniably powerful and intelligent creature. With the Raidan, there are those above her, but outside of their ranks, there are none, and she will always be the first to remind people of that.

Her fondness and belief in Thane as a leader has driven her for many years, and she is more devoted to him and his ideas and intentions than she has been of anyone else since her mother alone. When she heard he had been struck down, she senselessly murdered almost a dozen people before she came back to her senses, wiped the blood from her hands with an eerie calm, and requested a transfer from the France division of the Raidan to the one in Las Vegas where Thane was one of the leaders. At her age and with her experience and readiness and loyalty, Calanthe is a relatively high-ranked member of the Raidan and proud of her status as one of those towards the top of the ladder. She doesn’t necessarily look down on those below her; it entirely depends on the individual, what they can bring to the organisation, and their behaviour in general. No one but Thane has her unwavering allegiance though; he impressed her early on and has continued to do so over the years. She would love nothing more than to find the one responsible for his downfall and show them just why the Raidan should not be provoked.

The Watch and the Elari, in Calanthe’s mind, are little more than insects buzzing around. They could be crushed at any time, and she and the other Raidan are merely humouring them. She does delight in snuffing out the little lights that they are, though, sometimes as slowly, messily and painfully as possible. Calanthe will never pass up an opportunity to smite an enemy, and she is actually quite skilled at extracting information from people, and she doesn’t even have to possess their bodies in order to do so; she has other methods at her disposal and isn’t afraid to use them, even if they do make more of a mess in the process.

Calanthe at her most basic is what you might call a typical demon. Chaotic, cruel, twisted, conniving, spiteful and juvenile, bloodthirsty and curious. She looks like a child, can tempt unwitting men and women into her proverbial web, but beneath that misleading exterior is a demon who is very, very comfortable in her own skin and takes far too much pleasure in the use of her own powers, unnerving and unholy as they are.

history [top.]
FAMILY
  FATHER: coming soon.
  MOTHER: coming soon.
  SIBLING(S): None.

  • Born with the proverbial silver spoon in her mouth. Mother was French and father was English.
  • Her mother was a demon, and she passed that bloodline to their daughter.
  • Calanthe’s father spoiled her rotten, giving her everything she wanted, from dresses to dolls to ponies and puppies.
  • No one could quite figure out why those ponies and puppies were terrified of her, mind you.
  • Little Callie didn’t care. She had her “imaginary friends” to play with. Besides, her games weren’t really animal-friendly.
  • Her father found his daughter’s imagination endearing at first.
  • After a few years and no signs of improvement, it grew troubling to him. It didn’t reflect well on him at formal dinners and gatherings.
  • Calanthe was coming of age when he would ideally marry her off into another well-to-do family.
  • She was a touch too strange, though. She tended to scare off any potential suitors, regardless of their age.
  • She took a little too much joy in mentioning those “imaginary friends” of hers and their behaviour and stories… most of which involved death and carnage.
  • That never went down well, but it was how Calanthe rattled off the tales with the slightest touch of a smile on her face, so calm and genuine, that scared people.
  • Her father’s patience finally wore thin and he warned her to put an end to her childish games or there would be trouble.
  • Calanthe didn’t like the sound of that. Not at all.
  • The season had passed, thankfully, and she had time to sulk. Her mother had never had a problem with her “friends”.
  • It wasn’t until she discovered one of her father’s hunting dogs at the bottom of the garden (it had been dead for hours), that it became clear she wasn’t just imagining those “friends”.
  • Calanthe was curious. She had never seen a dead body before, being a young lady. She investigated and even went so far as to touch the body.
  • The dog promptly came back to life.
  • Well, not quite.
  • It reanimated and began lurching around the garden.
  • Into clear view of her father. Oh dear.
  • He recognised immediately that the dog was dead, or at least should be. Initially he was panicked for his daughter and snatched her out of the garden before fetching a gun and all but blowing the dog’s head clean off with a single shot.
  • Calanthe had no problem revealing that she had touched the dog, and that was when it had come back to life.
  • That night was the first and last time she saw her parents fight.
  • Mainly because her mother and father began to argue over Calanthe’s “condition”. Condition? Little Callie found that annoying and more than a little insulting. There was nothing wrong with her.
  • Her mother agreed with that fervently, and argued passionately in her daughter’s favour.
  • It reached such a staggering climax that by the end, they were all but screaming at one another. It meant that when Calanthe’s mother revealed herself as a demon, it carried through a good deal of the house. There was no way for Calanthe to miss that little piece of news.
  • Her father was stunned into silence, going on to pale in horror when his wife told him that their daughter had inherited her blood and was a demon too as a result.
  • The man of the house went for his gun.
  • His wife didn’t like that at all, and promptly killed her husband.
  • All of this Calanthe watched with a perverse kind of fascination.
  • That was not the last time that she saw someone killed before her, far from it, but it was by far the most interesting because it was the first.
  • Her mother encouraged her to practise her animation of the dead on her late father so that they might dispose of the body. Calanthe leapt at the chance, believing herself to be special with her mother feeding that belief and giving her little girl a terrible ego and sense of arrogance.
  • Calanthe animated her father’s body and together the two lured it right into the deep lake not far from their home, where the body was not found for two weeks. The death was ruled as a terrible, tragic accident, with the women inheriting everything thanks to a dear family friend.
  • For several years, Calanthe continued to spook men both young and old, telling them all about the shadows they couldn’t see, the voices whispering in the corners behind them, and the echoes of the dead watching their every move.
  • She also played with dead bodies when she could find them, bringing them back to life and experimenting with the gifts that had been passed into her blood from her mother and the demons who had come before.
  • Of course, with behaviour like that, it was only a matter of time before something bad happened.
  • A mob came to the family home in the middle of the night and set the house on fire.
  • With her mother insisting she run, assuring Calanthe that she would not be harmed, that fire could not hurt her, she pushed her daughter out into the night and stayed behind.
  • Calanthe did not get far before she was cornered by men brandishing tools and torches. They came towards her, calling her a witch.
  • Witch? Witch. She was no common witch.
  • Disgusted by the accusation, Calanthe lashed out and grabbed the nearest would-be attacker by the throat.
  • So it was that she discovered her ability to possess the living. She wreaked bloody havoc on that mob before they fled in terror, abandoning their hunt. Calanthe was stronger and more terrible than they had imagined.
  • Heading back to what remained of her house, Calanthe searched for her mother and found only remains. Her mother had lied to her.
  • Furious, Calanthe quickly flew into a rage. She proceeded to turn the people against one another, drove spirits to attack from the afterlife, brought the dead shambling and hungry back to the world of the living, scrambling out of their graves. From the sidelines she watched the humans fall before the power of her fury.
  • That was Calanthe’s first massacre. To this day, she remembered it with an odd kind of fondness.
  • She left the only home she had ever known with a strange kind of detachment, as though closing one book and opening another.
  • She travelled to France in memory of her mother, and spent many years living on the wealth of the dead, using spirits to locate treasures and hidden fortunes. There was no wrong in it, in her eyes; the dead had led her to the money and prizes, and more often than not, it was theirs to give. If they wanted to give it to her, that was their choice.
  • Never mind that Calanthe was growing steadily stronger and learning just how to manipulate spirits.
  • It was in France that she first encountered the Raidan.
  • Their outlook intrigued and pleased her; they were of like minds, and it was with the notion of a world her kind on top and the mortals crushed beneath their heel, submissive and fearful, that drove her to join.
  • She went on to learn all about the other supernaturals in the world, drinking in the knowledge like a fine wine.
  • Over the years following her alliance with the Raidan, Calanthe committed many despicable acts, turning fathers on children, wives on husbands, driving siblings to squabble and strike at one another. She resurrected the dead without need or provocation and used the lingering dead to do her bidding.
  • Life for Calanthe carried on in that fashion for decades and when the war ravaged the globe, it was her own personal idea of heaven. The irony did not escape her.
  • She had far too much fun in the years that the nations of the world were at one another’s throats, toying with the dead and the living alike as she pleased.
  • The power had well and truly gone to her head before this point, and her loyalty to the Raidan had been cemented in their acceptance of her habits and less than tasteful eccentricities. They encouraged her lust for carnage and that only made her more loyal to the likes of Thane Riordan and his ilk.
  • For the past few years she has been in France aiding the senior Raidan members there with their own efforts to bring the supernatural well and truly into the limelight.
  • When she heard about Thane’s death, she was the first to volunteer to travel to the United States, and made all the arrangements to completely relocate from France to America.
  • The first thing she did upon arriving was meet with the Las Vegas contingent of the Raidan and join them in their fight against the Watch and the Elari.

    SEXUAL
    Thane Riordan.
To say that there’s a connection between Calanthe and Thane would be a laughable understatement. They are undeniably attracted to one another and keep coming back for more, even with their shared flighty tendencies. Calanthe admires the power and pride in Thane, respects him completely as a leader, and of course, it doesn’t hurt at all that he is, without a doubt, one of the most attractive males she has ever been with. There’s more than one reason she keeps coming back to him. In her own way, she’s drawn to Thane, and couldn’t stop even if she tried.

Nikolas seems like a very unusual ally for Calanthe, but truth be told, she respects the quiet, unassuming vampire. She sees what others don’t, the strength and resolve hiding beneath that pristine exterior. It doesn’t hurt that he is curious about her and her abilities, and given her ego, that curiosity never goes amiss, and certainly earns him points when it comes to Calanthe’s good books.

    Rebecca Lambert.

    Irissa Madoré.
It doesn’t matter a bit to Calanthe that Irissa is a spoilt little princess. It’s the motivation and action that she takes note of, and the blonde does everything right and with a considerable amount of flair to boot. Irissa is one of those fun females who can also be dangerous, and Calanthe is always well and truly on board with people like that. Any time spent with the Madoré Princess is time well spent, as far as Calanthe is concerned.

    Lily Mae Fitzgerald.
Ah, Lily Mae. Hers and Calanthe’s powers were, quite simply, made for each other. More times than the spirit demon can count, Lily has rotted a victim all the way to the edge for Calanthe to bring back. The two have fun constantly, there’s no denying that, and it’s much the same story as it is with Irissa. Naturally nothing can top the three of them together, as terrifying as such a trio would be to outsiders.
